40 NEEDLES
Stage 3 (Acacia Masonic Hall)

What has T.J. Dawe wrought?
If uncredited in the program, Toronto-based Alberta expat Kristian Reimer's one-man show seems particularly inspired by the savvy veteran Fringe monologist. Dawe didn't invent this form and his trademarked lists aren't here. But Reimer's linguistic riffing, clean, dry delivery and a story based on a dodgy job certainly bring back Fringe memories.
The good news is that this is no slag, since Reimer shows genuine promise as a wry observer of human events, with a keen eye for signs of life in ordinary folks.
Playing a broke standup comic, Reimer recounts being reduced to a money-grubbing stint as human guinea pig in a pharmaceutical company study of a new drug. To pocket four grand, all he has to do with pop some XJ5 and submit to myriad bloodletting and blood pressure tests, administered by a dishy tech. There are Quiznos subs for lunch and Swiss Chalet chickens for dinner. Still, he's uneasy, and for good reason.
Along the way, we meet a variety of characters, most of them lifers on the human lab rat circuit, who have taken what seems to be the easy way out to making rent. It's funny stuff, but there's a poignancy here too, which adds heft to the laughs.
Still, there is a good brain at work here, which doesn't require prescription drugs --
